Classic Porsche 964 Turbo enthusiasts aim to tune their cars in style while preserving the original aesthetics that define this iconic sports car. The intercooler, a highly visible component in the engine bay, has unfortunately often been a compromise for most aftermarket units. Many aftermarket options, with their boxy-looking sheet metal tanks, detract from the car’s elegance. Furthermore, a critical element missing from all aftermarket solutions is the air guide. This component, mounted above the original intercooler, directs airflow through the core for efficient cooling—a surprisingly overlooked detail in most aftermarket projects, resulting in inefficient cooling as air bypasses the core.
Our Solution
In designing the MERA version of our intercooler for the Porsche 964 Turbo, do88 aimed to maintain the stock look while significantly improving performance. Our intercooler promises a substantial increase in cooling efficiency and a reduction in pressure drop, outperforming both original and most aftermarket alternatives. We chose a Bar & Plate core from Garrett Motorsport, known for its exceptional performance. The core’s thin, densely packed fins ensure effective heat transfer, and its 80mm thickness maximizes cooling potential without compromising the design of the original tanks and air ducts.
We believe our do88 MERA intercooler represents the best performance upgrade available, perfectly balancing exceptional performance with the desire to maintain the classic look of the Porsche 964 Turbo engine bay. It’s the ideal choice for high-powered builds, meticulously engineered to replicate the original mounting points, air ducts, hose connections, and sensor locations. We used an intercooler from the exotic Porsche 964 Leichtbau as a template for all shapes and sizes.
Designed for seamless integration, our intercooler fits all 3.3L and 3.6L Porsche 964 Turbos. Given the handcrafted nature of these cars, adjustments to the intercooler bracket position may be necessary to achieve the perfect fit. Fortunately, the OE intercooler brackets offer room for adjustment, which was likely already necessary from the production line, as the shape of the OE intercoolers we saw during this development process varied somewhat. However, these adjustments are minimal, ensuring owners can upgrade their cooling system without compromising the car’s classic look or the integrity of the installation process. Replacing the OE intercooler or any other aftermarket intercooler with ours restores the car’s prized appearance while providing a significant performance boost, embodying the perfect balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation.
