do88
do88 high-performance intercooler designed for easy installation in your BMW M2/M3/M4 F8X.
The S55 turbo engine powering the BMW M2C/M3/M4 F8X uses a top-mounted water-cooled intercooler instead of a “normal” air-cooled intercooler. This OE intercooler features a Tube & Fin core with clamped plastic end tanks. This construction has its drawbacks as it is prone to cracking and leaking coolant into the engine or losing boost pressure from the tank gaskets.
The final do88 design resulted in a bar-and-plate core with TIG-welded cast aluminum end tanks. This 85% larger core than the OEM reduces charge air pressure drop (16%) and maintains the drop-in installation without modifications. Reducing the charge pressure drop over the intercooler has several advantages, such as allowing the turbos to work less hard to achieve the target boost/lower temperature/improved throttle response. On the cooling water side, there is a dual-pass flow structure that allows the coolant to flow through the core twice before exiting the intercooler, instead of the OE single-pass structure.
There is a high-density staggered cooling fin on both the air and water sides. Extensive testing was performed to find the optimal balance between the air and water fins for maximum heat transfer. This gives this intercooler a huge increase in active cooling area compared to the OE.
Significant benefits with the do88 performance intercooler (stock comparison numbers):
– Peak power gain of 13 HP! Measured on cars with BootMod3 Stage 1 tuning.
– Highest mid-range power gain of 25 HP!
– Maximum torque gain of 52 Nm!
– Increased core volume: 5657 cm3 (3052 cm3), 85% larger!
– Airflow at 0.025 bar/0.36 psi pressure drop: 298 CFM (256 CFM), 16% more!
– Lower post-intercooler air temperature under the same conditions: 39Β°C (102Β°F), 9Β°C lower!*
* Measured at 240 km/h during full-throttle acceleration from 0 to 240 km/h on the air track. Both tests were performed on the same day under the same conditions.
